I can't find my EIN letter. What can I do?
When going through the business account verification process, you might need to provide a proof document. Typically, this means a government-issued letter featuring your registered business name and EIN such as an EIN letter (CP 575) or a business license.
What’s an EIN?
If you cannot find either, you can order a CP 575 from the IRS, but it requires a few steps and a call with the IRS so not the ideal step.
- Call the IRS: To obtain a copy of your verification letter, dial 1-800-829-4933 for the “business and specialty tax line.”
- Speak to an agent: Once connected with an IRS agent, simply request a 147c letter—that’s the document number for a new copy of your EIN verification letter. Don’t forget to have your EIN ready!
- Confirm your identity: Remember, only authorized individuals can request this letter. The agent will ask a few questions to verify your identity, even if you know your EIN.
- Choose your delivery method: While calling is the quickest way to get your documents, the IRS won’t email sensitive information. You can receive your 147c letter by mail or fax. Keep in mind that IRS mail can take weeks to arrive, so if you need it sooner, opt for the fax option!
